Could you define what your job role details and your day to day routine?

My job is Director (a.i.) for the Dietsmann Smart Robotics Lab. We focus on Robotic applications for industrial use (for heavy industry, such as Oil and Gas, Chemical, Power Plants, Mining), including data gathering using robots. So we are also looking into applications using Blockchain to securely use and share this data. We think we can add value to our customers with these solutions, and as such, help them in their challenges to be more efficient, perform with higher uptimes and not to forget within a good HSE-culture.

How is your organisation applying blockchain?

We are in what you could call the the ‘exploration phase’. We are scouting opportunities, and try to make some in-house ‘dummy-testing’. The bigger picture for us is that Blockchain could be a practical solution regarding secure and reliable data sharing (amongst companies or locations), for instance using IoT-sensors or applications. We subsequently could use this data to better predict performance, again, for the benefit of our clients.

What were the biggest challenges in using this technology?

To prove the real value of Blockchain; we need to convince many partners in the process that indeed it could be beneficial to take this route, and that it can deliver a ‘win-win’ situation. It is a challenge for everyone.

What can we expect from company in the next 12 months?

We will further scout for opportunities/ business applications and do some testing set-ups/ internal demo’s. As well, we will further look to the chicken with the golden eggs….

What can we expect from blockchain in the next 12 months?

Further technological and organizational breakthroughs. Again, the whole value-cycle has to be convinced. I guess the first ‘real-life’ applications (apart from Bitcoin…) will materialize in 2019/2020, paving the way for further investments and trials. It should become a snowball running down the slopes. For now, we are only working our way up the hill.

What are you most looking forward to at the show?

Good exchange of thoughts and idea’s, forming new partnerships and contacts, forming new solutions that make a difference. And perhaps find the chicken with the golden eggs…..

Duco Drenth will be speaking at Blockchain Expo Global on Day 1 at 4.00pm, Blockchain Solutions for Enterprise stage.
